Bryson City is the southernmost North Carolina gateway to Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the most adventure-forward town in the region. It sits at the confluence of the Tuckasegee and Oconaluftee rivers, just north of Fontana Lake, with direct access to Deep Creek (a GSMNP section known for three short-hike waterfalls), the Nantahala Gorge (home to the Nantahala Outdoor Center and a half-dozen rafting outfitters), and the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad — a 50-mile scenic train that's been running historic steam and diesel consists since 1988.
Deep Creek is the daily-hike star: three waterfalls (Juney Whank, Tom Branch, Indian Creek) reachable as a 2.4-mile loop, plus tubing on Deep Creek itself (rent tubes at the Deep Creek Tubing outfitters at the park gate). The Nantahala Gorge, 20 minutes west, drops 500 feet over 8 miles through Class II and III rapids that have hosted Olympic whitewater training; day rafting trips run April through October. And the Appalachian Trail crosses at Fontana Dam, 30 minutes southwest.
The "Road to Nowhere" is the town's strangest feature — a 6-mile paved road that dead-ends at a tunnel, built as partial payment for land flooded by Fontana Lake in the 1940s and never finished. It's a surprisingly good short drive, with the tunnel at the end a photogenic walk-through.

Deep Creek waterfall loop
Start at the Deep Creek picnic area, hike to Juney Whank Falls (0.3 mi), on to Indian Creek Falls (1.1 mi), then Tom Branch Falls (0.3 mi on the return). 2.4 miles total, mostly flat. Suitable for families.
Nantahala outfitters are seasonal
Rafting runs April through October. July/August are busiest but water is warmest. April and October have the smallest crowds — bring wetsuits.
