Definitive Smokies Guide
Smokies Waterfalls
Every publicly accessible waterfall worth the hike — from the thundering payoff of Rainbow Falls to the quiet moss-walled cascade of Juney Whank.
50 entries across 2 locations compiled from authoritative sources.
The Smokies hold more publicly accessible waterfalls per square mile than almost any comparable range in the eastern United States. Heavy orographic rainfall — one of the highest annual totals east of the Pacific Northwest — keeps streams running hard even in late summer, and the rugged sandstone and metamorphosed geology carves cascades of every character: roaring 80-foot plunges, long horsetail cascades, wide curtain falls, quiet mossy slides, and hike-behind curtains like Grotto Falls.
This index covers the named waterfalls we have researched: Rainbow Falls, Ramsey Cascades (the park's tallest at 100 feet), Abrams Falls (the park's most voluminous), Laurel Falls, Mingo Falls (across the NC line), Linville Falls, and several dozen more — roadside pullouts, short family-friendly trails, and full-day backcountry waterfall hikes. Each page lists the waterfall's approximate height, the trail distance and difficulty from the nearest trailhead, seasonal flow notes, and photography timing advice. Every page is anchored by a Stay22 lodging map centered on the waterfall so you can book nearby without guessing at drive times.
Waterfalls are the most dangerous features in the park — far more so than bears, bees, or weather. Swimming near the base, climbing the rocks beside them, or wading the top is how most waterfall fatalities happen. Enjoy them from marked viewing spots, keep children back from wet rocks, and treat every moss-covered ledge as slick.
Plan smarter
Follow the rain
Flow is strongest in March–May and after late-summer thunderstorms. By mid-August in a dry year, some smaller cascades run thin. Big falls — Abrams, Rainbow, Ramsey — run strong year-round.
Shoot on overcast days
Midday sun blows out the highlights on most falls and creates harsh contrast. Overcast or lightly raining conditions give evenly lit, saturated results. Early morning and late afternoon also work.
Never climb on or swim under the falls
The combination of slick algae, recirculating currents, and submerged debris kills visitors every year in the Smokies. Enjoy from designated viewpoints. Period.
