Smokies Scenic Overlooks
Every named pullout and overlook on Newfound Gap Road, Foothills Parkway, the Blue Ridge Parkway's southern section, Cherohala Skyway, and the Cades Cove Loop.
68 entries across 5 locations compiled from authoritative sources.
The Smokies are a scenic-drive destination first, a hiking destination second — for many visitors the long view from a pullout on Newfound Gap Road, Foothills Parkway, Cherohala Skyway, or the southern Blue Ridge Parkway is the postcard image they take home. The park built most of its overlooks as part of the original 1930s design: stone walls, graded pullouts, low-impact trails to a view. Those stops are still the fastest way to see the Smokies without getting out of your car.
This index catalogs every named overlook we have researched — on Newfound Gap Road (US-441), the Foothills Parkway east and west segments, the Cades Cove loop, the Blue Ridge Parkway between Cherokee and the Balsam Mountain turnoff, the Cherohala Skyway, and the Heintooga Ridge Road. Each page lists the road, the milepost or location reference, elevation, the best light direction and time, the view description, and typical parking capacity. Every overlook page is anchored with a Stay22 map so you can base near the corridor you want.
Cloud inversions — where a valley fog fills the hollow below while the ridgetops stay clear above — are common late-fall mornings at higher Smokies overlooks (Newfound Gap, Clingmans Dome, Foothills Parkway high points). Sunrise on a 38°F autumn morning with a clear sky and rain the day before is the classic recipe. Plan accordingly.
Plan smarter
Sunrise vs sunset
East-facing overlooks — Newfound Gap, Morton, Oconaluftee — light best at sunrise. West-facing — Foothills, Look Rock, parts of BRP — glow best at sunset. Plan your day accordingly.
Winter access
Newfound Gap Road, Clingmans Dome Road, BRP, and high Foothills sections close regularly for ice and snow. Check nps.gov/grsm and nps.gov/blri status before driving up in November–March.
Parking reality
Clingmans (Kuwohi), Newfound Gap, and Morton fill completely by 10 AM on peak-season weekends. Plan a dawn visit or expect circling.
