Wears Valley is a long, narrow mountain valley running roughly east–west between Pigeon Forge and Townsend, connected to both by twisting mountain roads. Historically a farming community, today it's the Smokies' premier cabin-rental back-door — quiet nights, exceptional mountain views, and an easy 15-minute drive into either of the two biggest tourism towns when you want activity.
The valley's defining recent change: the completion of the Foothills Parkway West (the "Missing Link") in 2018. The 16-mile scenic parkway now connects Wears Valley to Townsend directly, adding a dozen overlooks with some of the most dramatic southwest Smokies views anywhere. The Metcalf Bottoms picnic area, Little Greenbrier School, and The Sinks (a popular swimming hole — still dangerous) all fall within a short drive.
For cabin visitors, Wears Valley offers the cabin-in-the-woods experience without the chalet density of Gatlinburg or the Parkway noise of Pigeon Forge. Several of the region's best large-group rental properties (8-30 bedrooms, mountaintop views) sit on ridges here. The trade-off: very little walkable infrastructure, and dining options are limited — most cabin-goers drive to Pigeon Forge, Townsend, or Sevierville for meals.

Insider logistics
Foothills Parkway West
The 16-mile Foothills Parkway West is one of the best scenic drives you've never heard of. Every overlook is worth the stop, especially Big Ridge, Look Rock, and the Hickory Cove turnout. Best light is late-afternoon west-facing.
Steep drives in winter
Most Wears Valley cabins sit at the top of gravel mountain driveways. In ice or snow, 2WD vehicles may not make it up — confirm with the property before arriving if there's a winter weather forecast.
Grocery run before arrival
There's no full-size grocery store in Wears Valley. Stock up at the Kroger or Food City in Pigeon Forge or Sevierville before driving in, especially for multi-night stays with groups.
