Smokies trip planning, answered

Do I need a parking tag for the Smokies?
Yes. The Park It Forward program requires a tag for any vehicle parked more than 15 minutes anywhere inside Great Smoky Mountains National Park — $5 daily, $15 weekly, or $40 annual, sold at visitor centers and on recreation.gov. There is no entrance fee, only the parking tag.
When is the best time to visit?
October draws the biggest crowds for peak foliage, and it is spectacular — but book lodging months ahead. Late April brings wildflowers, June brings the synchronous fireflies, and the weeks between marquee events are the Smokies at their most accessible. Summer is warm in the valleys and 15–20°F cooler at Newfound Gap and Kuwohi.
Where should I stay — Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, or Townsend?
Gatlinburg puts you walking distance to the Parkway and a quick drive to the most popular trailheads. Pigeon Forge is the family-and-attractions hub (Dollywood, shows, go-karts). Townsend is "the peaceful side," closest to Cades Cove. Cabins in Wears Valley and Cosby trade convenience for quiet and value. Compare live prices on our stays map to see what fits your dates.
What is Kuwohi?
Kuwohi is the Cherokee name officially restored in 2024 to the peak formerly called Clingmans Dome — at 6,643 feet, the highest point in the park and in Tennessee. A paved half-mile climb leads to a spiral observation tower with 360-degree ridge views.
Can I see bears and elk?
Black bears range throughout the park; Cades Cove and Roaring Fork are reliable viewing areas at dawn and dusk. Elk were reintroduced to Cataloochee Valley and the Oconaluftee meadow near Cherokee, NC — the September–October rut is the most dramatic time to watch them. Always keep at least 50 yards away.
How many days do I need?
A long weekend covers the highlights — Cades Cove, Newfound Gap, one waterfall hike, and a gateway town. Five to seven days lets you reach Cataloochee, drive the full scenic corridors, and mix park time with Dollywood or Cherokee without rushing.
