About Balsam Mountain Campground

Balsam Mountain Campground sits at roughly 5,300 feet along the Blue Ridge Parkway at Milepost 458.2, near Cherokee, NC — one of the highest-elevation campgrounds accessible via the Parkway in this stretch of the Southern Appalachians. At that altitude, the valley heat below simply doesn't arrive: nights are cool even in July, and the surrounding spruce-fir forest feels more like New England than the mid-Atlantic South. If your idea of a good trip involves uncrowded trails, cold mornings, and genuine quiet, this is the campground worth planning around.

The Setting

Access comes via Heintooga Ridge Road, which begins at the campground's entrance off the Blue Ridge Parkway. The road is paved but narrow and winding, working through dense high-elevation forest before reaching the Heintooga Picnic Area at 5,400 feet. That picnic area functions as a trailhead cluster for several less-trafficked routes into Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and the overlooks along the road deliver wide mountain views — the kind you sometimes share with no one at all on a weekday morning.

The campground occupies the park's quieter southeastern quadrant, far removed from the Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge corridors. This is a deliberate choice for some campers and a pleasant surprise for others who expected the Smokies to feel crowded no matter where they went. Heintooga Ridge Road is open seasonally — typically late May through October — and conditions can vary. The campground itself runs late May through late September, so the road may still be passable after the campground closes for the season, but check NPS conditions before a late-season trip.

What the Campground Offers

Balsam Mountain has 46 sites in total, accommodating both tents and smaller RVs. There are no electrical hookups, no dump station, and no showers. Flush toilets are available at the campground entrance. Pit toilets are also available at Heintooga Overlook nearby, and picnic areas are located at both the campground and Heintooga Overlook.

This is genuinely rustic camping by national park standards. For campers accustomed to developed facilities at Elkmont or Smokemont, the reduced amenity set here is a real difference. Plan your water supply and food logistics in advance. The trade-off is a smaller campground, a quieter atmosphere, and a setting that the larger, lower-elevation campgrounds in the park simply can't match. Families or groups who need electrical hookups, sewer access, or shower facilities should choose a different park campground — this one doesn't offer those.

Note that pets are not permitted at Balsam Mountain Campground.

Reservations and Pricing

Reservations are managed through Recreation.gov at recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/232500. Sites have been priced around $20 per night in recent seasons — confirm current rates when booking, as fees change year to year.

The short operating window (late May to late September) combined with 46 sites and real demand from campers who specifically want high-elevation, non-hookup camping means availability gets tight. Summer weekends and any weekend in late September book out weeks in advance. If your trip dates are fixed, reserve the day your window opens on Recreation.gov. Walk-up availability is technically possible but not reliable in peak season.

Getting There

From Cherokee, follow the Blue Ridge Parkway south to Milepost 458.2, where the Heintooga Ridge Road turnoff marks the campground entrance. GPS coordinates for the campground are approximately 35.5398° N, 83.1798° W. The access road is paved but demands attention — it's narrow, the curves are tight, and there's no margin for distraction. Standard passenger vehicles and smaller self-contained trailers navigate it without difficulty; large fifth-wheels or Class A motorhomes should check NPS length and size guidance for this road before making the drive.

A Park It Forward parking tag is required anywhere inside Great Smoky Mountains National Park for vehicles parked longer than 15 minutes. Pricing runs $5/day, $15/week, or $40/year, purchasable through Recreation.gov or at park entrance kiosks. Check current NPS guidance on whether overnight campers at a reserved site are covered under their reservation fee or whether the tag applies separately.

Trails from Camp

The Balsam Mountain Trail begins directly at the campground (trailhead coordinates: 35.5898° N, 83.2120° W) and runs 5.8 miles one-way to Pin Oak Gap, gaining roughly 1,300 feet of elevation along the way. The rating is strenuous. The route moves through high-elevation spruce-fir forest — a plant community normally found hundreds of miles farther north — and the experience is noticeably different from lower-elevation Smokies trails. Traffic is light, which adds to the remote feel. The trail is point-to-point in its primary form, making it easiest with a shuttle vehicle at Pin Oak Gap or a willingness to retrace the same ground.

The Heintooga Picnic Area, reachable from camp via Heintooga Ridge Road, adds another set of trailheads for those who want additional options beyond Balsam Mountain Trail. The picnic area at 5,400 feet also makes a good lunch stop — the views from that elevation carry across ridge after ridge with very little development in the frame.

Timing and Conditions

Late May through late September is the full operating window, but not all parts of that range are equal. Late May and June bring rhododendron blooms through the high-elevation forest, and the display along Heintooga Ridge Road is substantial. It doesn't get the same attention as lower-elevation blooms closer to Gatlinburg, so crowds stay manageable. Midsummer (July through August) delivers the most reliably cool camping temperatures in the broader Smokies area — a legitimate practical advantage for anyone planning long hikes or traveling with children who don't do well in valley-floor heat.

By late September, the first fall color appears at this elevation before leaves turn lower down. That timing puts the campground right at the leading edge of the autumn change — if the season is open, it's a strong window to visit. The Blue Ridge Parkway itself is subject to closures for ice, dense fog, and maintenance, with the highest frequency in early spring and late fall. Even within the campground's operating season, a cold front can temporarily close Parkway access. Check the NPS road conditions page for the Blue Ridge Parkway the day before you leave.

Know Before You Go

  • No hookups, no showers, no dump station. Flush toilets are at the campground entrance; plan water and waste management accordingly.
  • No pets. Pets are not permitted at this campground.
  • Bear boxes are at each site. All food, coolers, and scented items must be secured in your vehicle or the provided bear box when not in active use. This applies even when you're a short walk from your tent. Violations carry fines and create habituation problems for bears near camp.
  • Forty-six sites, four-month window. Book as early as Recreation.gov allows if your dates are firm.
  • Cell service is limited at this elevation and in this part of the park. Download offline maps and trail information before you leave Cherokee.
  • Pack layers. Temperatures at 5,300 feet can drop sharply after dark even in midsummer — a 75°F afternoon in the valley can mean a 45°F night at camp. A fleece and a wind layer are not optional at Balsam Mountain.
